The EPA recently finalized the regulation of the use of amalgam separators which will be mandatory in all dental offices come July 2020. What these separators do is catch the drilled out amalgam so it doesn’t reach our sewers and eventually the ocean. If they are going this far to prevent it from getting into the environment, why would we allow this material in our mouths?

We not only don’t believe in placing amalgam, but we also take extra precautions when removing silver fillings as well. Since amalgam fillings are made up of approximately 50% mercury (IAOMT) we want to protect you from that toxin as best we can. While we don’t push our patients to swap out their amalgam fillings for composite (tooth colored) fillings just because, we recommend they become educated in the harm mercury does to the body.

• High-volume HEPA air filtration vacuum placed two to four inches from your mouth
• All staff in the room wear a respiratory mask
• External oxygen for you to breathe via a nasal cannula
• Non-latex dental dam providing isolation to the tooth
• High speed evacuation in your mouth
• Removal of amalgam in large chunks to reduce mercury vapor
• Once removal is complete, the mouth is thoroughly flushed with water
