Having your teeth cleaned on a regular basis by a professional dental hygienist is one of the most important parts of any dental care plan. At Dr. Linda Makuta’s Encino dental office, we have hygienists who provide thorough yet gentle cleanings that will help you have a fresh start every 6 months.
Apart from providing great cleanings, our hygienists also make personal connections with all their patients. We will work with you to ensure that you enjoy the benefits of the latest dental cleaning techniques.
Why Should You Get Regular Dental Cleanings?
Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing every night, as directed by your hygienist, is imperative. So, why should you go back every 6 months for a professional cleaning? Even if you are using the best toothbrush and the best techniques to clean your teeth, you may still miss some areas on your teeth, especially those areas below the gum line.
However, this is not a reflection on you. It is just that your teeth are not uniform and it can be hard to reach every single surface. This is especially true for those with slightly crooked teeth, crowded teeth and those whose teeth have some gaps.
Over time, the plaque left in the small areas will harden into tartar. Unfortunately, tartar cannot be removed with a toothbrush. It can only be removed by professional instruments. This tartar can lead to cavities and gum disease if they are not removed in a timely manner.
We agree with the American Dental Association recommendation that every person should have his or her teeth professionally cleaned after every 6 months at a minimum.
At times, it may be a good idea to go for cleanings more often especially if you have missed a couple cleanings and have significant tartar buildup or if you are undergoing treatment for gum disease. If we believe that you need more frequent cleanings, we will discuss it with you.
What happens during professional teeth cleaning?
A cleaning usually begins with an ultrasonic instrument that knocks pieces of tartar off your teeth. Your hygienist will also use water to rinse away the bits of tartar and keep the area at an appropriate temperature. I know that you are probably familiar with the whistling sound this instrument makes as it is one of the most distinctive noises that people hear in a dental office.
The hygienist will then go over your teeth with fine hand-held instruments to look for smaller tartar deposits that may have been missed by the ultrasonic instrument. Using careful pressure, your hygienist will gently remove the tartar deposits from the surface of your teeth and beneath the gum line.
After removing all the plaque and tartar, we will polish your teeth using a device with a small head and a gritty paste. The grit from the paste usually polishes teeth to make them smooth and shiny. This will make you feel amazing when you run your tongue over your teeth.
Your hygienist will also discuss your home care habits with you during your appointment. As we discuss your daily dental hygiene, you will be provided with suggestions for improving your routine and your technique.
