We know how much your value your health and having an attractive smile, that’s why our dentists fill cavities with composite fillings and make any other necessary repair to ensure your teeth last as long as possible. Silver amalgam fillings were in widespread use at one point in time and considered to be the best way to fill cavities back then. Now there is a much better way. Dr. Makuta is proud to be able to offer all of her patients mercury free fillings.

Why Are Composite Fillings Better?

Composite resin fillings provide several significant advantages over silver amalgam fillings. As an example, if your cavities were filled with silver fillings, you may have already heard about all the issues that they can cause:

  • They can cause dark spots to form on your teeth that make it impossible to hide the fact that you’ve had a cavity in the past. As time passes, the fillings become quite dark and are easily visible. Some people who’ve had extensive cavity treatment in the past, are too self-conscious to smile or laugh in public as a result of theses unsightly dark spots.
  • They contain small amounts of mercury. Although some studies conducted by the U.S. Public Health Department and the CDC have indicated that no link exists between mercury in fillings and adverse health effects, it is reasonable that most people would prefer not to have any mercury in their mouths.
  • They’re made of metal, which will expand and contract as the temperature changes, as is the case with all metals. As time passes, this could cause the fillings to work themselves loose. If this happens, decay could begin to progress again behind the filling. The filling could even fall out or damage the tooth.

None of these concerns are present with composite fillings, which are made with a tooth-colored resin that will blend perfectly with the natural shade of your teeth. This allows the filling to blend in when you smile so that it won’t be noticeable. The composite resin is made of a combination of porcelain and plastic, and it contains no dangerous chemicals. Also, because of the way they are installed, we’re able to preserve more of the natural tooth structure. This makes them more stable, and far less likely to work themselves loose that metal fillings.

Why Are Cavities Bad?

Your mouth, like everyone else’s, contains millions of bacteria. They are the culprits that cause cavities in our teeth. When you eat foods that are rich in carbohydrates and sugars, these bacteria thrive. They spread through your saliva and cling to teeth in the form of plaque. They then excrete acid to slowly break down the protective enamel coating on your teeth. In time, a pit will begin to form in the structure of a tooth. This is called a cavity.

Regular brushing and rinsing your mouth after you’ve eaten any foods high in carbohydrates or sugar will help clear your mouth of the sugary residue that the bacteria thrives on, and will also remove plaque from your teeth. Dr. Linda Makuta can provide regular cleanings to help get rid any stubborn plaque that you couldn’t get rid of by brushing at home.
